Halo: the Master Chief Collection: Sam's favorite arena shooter

Halo: the Master Chief Collection Trailer

What's special about it?

Halo is such a special game. It basically put console shooters on the map back in 2001. It has such a great story, and each game gets better and better, with a small exception (Halo 4). The controls are great. The multiplayer mode is absolutely amazing, especially if you have a group of friends to play with. The multiplayer still holds up well today. I have such fond memories of Halo LAN parties and tournaments. This was basically the last great Arena shooter, until Halo 4 tried to reinvent the wheel and failed miserably at it. The one thing I will advise though, is avoid Halo 4's multiplayer. Halo 4 is by far the worst Halo game in this collection. Think of Halo 4 like the last season of Game of Thrones, its best to pretend it never existed.

You see, Bungie made all the Halo games from Halo: Combat Evolved (Halo 1), all the way to Halo: Reach (their last Halo game). After that, Microsoft’s in house studio took it over, and Halo has been an absolute dumpster fire ever since. They have changed everything that made Halo great, in their futile pursuit to try and replicate Call of Duty's success. This has led to a very noticeable decline in all Halo games quality since Bungie left the series, and ultimately Halo's overall popularity. I digress.

Once you get a good multiplayer game going in Halo, there is nothing like it. It is heart pounding, and adrenaline inducing. There is nothing like landing that last snipe when the score is 49-49 in team slayer, or the pressure of running the flag in a close 1-1 game of capture the flag. The campaigns are also a blast to play. I personally recommend playing on the Legendary difficulty from the get go. This will not only help make you amazing at the game, it ensures you get your money’s worth out of the game, I promise you. The graphics have also been updated, but you can toggle between the old graphics and updated graphics mid game.

If you end up giving this a try and you are playing just for the campaigns, I would play them in this order if you want the chronological order of the game’s timeline. Halo: Reach, Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Halo 4. If you want to play them in the order they released, then you want Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo: ODST, Halo: Reach, Halo 4. Just remember, Halo 4 is not the same company that made the great games that came before it, consider yourself warned about Halo 4. Also keep in mind, if you play the multiplayer, Halo is not a twitch shooter like Call of Duty, or even Overwatch. Halo is slower and methodical with a higher time to kill. There is a huge emphasis on map control and controlling the weapon spawns on the map..

Pros

  • The story is an epic saga along with an epic soundtrack to go with it (except for Halo 4)
  • The multiplayer is outstanding (except for Halo 4)
  • Much more strategic than Call of Duty or Overwatch (except for Halo 4)
  • All of the best Halo games in one single collection (excluding Halo 4)

Cons

  • Halo 4 is in this collection
